Conquistador, gold miner, and
devoted family man, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed
California for Spain in 1542. The expedition he led,
consisting of three ships and 200 men, mapped portions
of the West Coast from Baja California to San Francisco
Bay.
Discover more about this epic
journey through an interactive version of the ship’s
log, created by Harvest Moon Studio for the National
Park Service.
Cabrillo National Historic Monument is located on Point Loma in San Diego,
where Cabrillo first made landfall on what is now U.S. soil.
