LINCOLN HOME NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
Springfield, Illinois

From the outside, the four-block area preserved by the National Park Service resembles Celebration, USA, Disney’s picture-perfect town. From within, it serves as a gritty reminder that yesterday is just as messy, delightful, and unpredictable as today.

The neighborhood where Lincoln spent most of his adult life was surprisingly diverse. During Mr. Lincoln’s long absences on the law circuit, Mary Lincoln leaned on her neighbor Julia Sprigg, born in Germany and widowed in the U.S. Across the street lived Harriet Dean, a single mother, amateur botanist, and teacher whose husband succumbed to Gold Rush fever. Just two doors away lived the Jenkins, an African American family.

Heather Lindquist/Harvest Moon Studio is researching, planning, and writing the new exhibits, under contact to Krister Olmon, Inc., and Exhibitology.
